Backlight Control?

Hi fellow META owners!

Is it not possible to change the screen's backlight intensity?

Peut-on changer l'intensité du rétroéclairage de l'écran?

I don't think so but it should be possible to build brightness (of the pixels themselves) into the core library if we really wanted to.  (esp easy for the index modes, since you'd just calculate the palette brightness once per screen render).  Wouldn't be that hard for a game to do it on top of the core library either.

The hardware also has a gamma setting, though I'm pretty sure that's not what we want.

While there is no brightness control, I found never the need to had one: The screen is perfectly clear in direct sunlight and not too bright in the dark

I found it too bright in the dark : impossible to play in bed without disturbing other(s).

Being able to play in bed is very important when it's so cold like right now ;-)

Mmmh, you can disable sound and light effects in the home menu, but not the backlight. I'm surprised it's bright enough to disturb others... only solution is to hide under the blanket ^^

...or we could make a night mode color palette (kidding).

is this a hardware limitation?

I'll use some polarized tape or sunglasses ;)

Yes this is a hardware limitation, as dreamer3 said it's hardwired. It's a compromise to free some I/O to have 100% of the Arduino I/O available.

We could make some tinted cases to reduce screen brightness haha

The backlight is likely hard-wired to VIN/etc.  As I said before though it wouldn't be hard to add a brightness adjust to palette modes... Rodot said the same thing, though he was joking. LOL.

It's not the actual backlight though... if the screen is "All black" it's not too bright is it?  So if we had a way to dim the colors then we'd resolve this issue.

I think the screen is an OLED, but I could be wrong there, the kickstarter doesn't say exactly what kind was used. if it is, then black will be black regardless.

Pretty sure it's not OLED.

I can confirm that: the global backlight can clearly be seen on the sides (even when screen is black)
